Seasonal Highway Worker

Are you looking for summer employment? Do you like working outside? Dunn County Highway Department is currently seeking four Seasonal Workers to assist in summer construction and maintenance activities.

Under the guidance of the Patrol Superintendent or Highway Crew Supervisor, the Seasonal Worker is responsible for performing routine and general highway maintenance and laborer duties depending upon position assignment(s) within the department.  Positions assigned to Seasonal Workers are similar to that of Highway Operator but differ in that no prior experience is required to gain entry into the job, there are no tasks that require a CDL, and duties tend to be more structured and involve closer supervision.

This position works 10 hours a day, Monday through Thursday.  

 

Primary Responsibilities

The following duties are primarily performed and which are essential for this position.  Employees are expected to be able to perform each of these job duties satisfactorily and successfully to be qualified for the position.  Other duties may be required and assigned.
 

  • Performs general highway maintenance and related activities including pavement patching, repairing signs, clearing trees & brush, hauling materials & supplies, traffic control & flagging, sweeping, crack filling, drainage culvert installation & maintenance, guardrail & cable rail maintenance, debris and litter pickup, and bridge maintenance, etc.
  • Maintain shop yard and grounds including mowing, trimming, sweeping and shoveling.
  • Performs general cleaning and custodial duties/functions.                                             
  • Operates pickup trucks, mower, and other non CDL equipment as required.
  • Assists highway maintenance personnel and crews in responding to emergency situations (e.g. high water, blocked roads, wash outs, pavement buckles, traffic incidents, etc.), as required.
  • Performs other duties of a comparable level/type, as required.

 

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • No previous experience is required.
 
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENT: Prior to hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant’s suitability and competence to perform in the position. 
  • Valid Class D driver’s license
 
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES QUALIFICATIONS: In order to perform the duties of the position (listed above) the following knowledge, skills, and abilities are essential for the Seasonal worker to possess.
•     Carrying out assignments under direct supervision and instructions.
•     Learning and following instructions in performing a variety of general laborer and highway maintenance activities and assignments (e.g. traffic control & flagging, pavement patching, drainage culverts, crack sealing, sweeping intersections, bridge maintenance, etc.)
•     Reading, understanding, and following health and safety procedures and written instructions.
•     Learning and using a variety of hand tools, power tools and equipment used in the performance of job activities.
•     Learning the operations, activities and functions of maintenance crews.
•     Establishing and maintaining working relationships with departmental staff.
 
MINIMUM LANGUAGE SKILLS QUALIFICATIONS: In order to perform the duties of the position (listed above) the following language skills are essential for the Seasonal worker to possess. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other members of the staff and supervisors. 
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in both written and verbal form.
  • English skills (oral, written and comprehension) sufficient to effectively communicate with all internal and external customers.
 
MINIMUM REASONING ABILITY QUALIFICATIONS: In order to perform the duties of the position (listed above) the following reasoning abilities are essential for the Seasonal worker to possess.
  • Ability to understand and effectively carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Must have ability to work accurately with attention to detail.
 
MINIMUM MATHEMATICAL ABILITY QUALIFICATIONS: In order to perform the duties of the position (listed above) the following mathematical skills are essential for the Seasonal worker to possess.
  • Ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals.

Physical and Work Environment

Working in and around high-speed traffic, high volume traffic, hazardous chemicals, inclement weather conditions, hot and cold temperatures, high temperature materials; risk of injury from using power hand tools/equipment or heavy lifting.
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • This work requires occasional exertion of up to 75 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds, and up to 10 pounds of force continuously to lift, carry, push and pull. 
  • Work occasionally requires sitting; frequently requires standing and walking; occasionally requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing or crawling and continuously requires reaching with hands and arms.
  • Work has standard vision requirements.
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • The work environment involves exposure to materials, equipment and situations that require following safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
