Assistant Professor of Computer Science

The University of Wisconsin-Stout, Wisconsin's Polytechnic University, invites applications for a tenure-track position in Computer Science at the Assistant Professor level with an anticipated start date of August 18th, 2025. We are seeking candidates with a strong commitment to high-quality undergraduate computer science teaching who also have an interest in potentially teaching master's level students. Our institution boasts nationally ranked, ABET-accredited programs that encompass a diverse range of specialized areas within Computer Science, including Game Design and Development, Cybersecurity, Software Engineering/Programming Languages, Mobile and Web Development, and Machine Learning/Data Science. As a polytechnic university, we support student learning in alignment with UW-Stout's polytechnic tenets of applied learning and research, business and industry collaboration, and career focused experiences.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum / Required

  • PhD (or equivalent) in computer science, software engineering, or related field required by contract start date. 
  • Commitment to teaching undergraduate computer science courses.

Highly Desired/Preferred

  • Demonstrated area of expertise that contributes to teaching core computer science courses. 
  • Interest in involving undergraduate students in research. 
  • Interest in teaching graduate level coursework in computer science.
  • Interest in supervising master's level student research.

RESPONSIBILITIES

UW-Stout is a primarily teaching institution with faculty teaching typically 24 credits per year. Teaching lower and upper-level undergraduate courses and possibly master's level courses in computer science, involvement in curriculum development, research and scholarly activity, academic advisement, course and program assessment of student learning, and service to the department and the university are expected along with other duties as assigned by the department chair.

DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

The Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Department offers all the core courses necessary for the ABET-accredited Computer Science program (~437 students), the Applied Mathematics and Computer Science program (~102 students), the Cybersecurity program (~128), the Computer Networking and Infrastructure Engineering  program (~84), as well as coursework supporting the ABET-accredited Computer and Electrical Engineering program (~161 students). The department is currently planning an M. S. in Applied Computer Science program for potential launch in Fall 2025.  The B.S. Computer Science program has earned national acclaim for its exceptional concentration in Game Design and Development, achieving recognition that places UW-Stout at an impressive 30th overall ranking in Princeton Review's evaluations. Additionally, we proudly hold the designation as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense, a distinction awarded by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Our commitment to affordability is further highlighted as our Computer Science program is nationally ranked among the 30 Most Affordable Residential Bachelor's Degrees in Computer Science for 2021 by computersciencedegreehub.com.

In our computer science classes, we prioritize a conducive learning environment with an average class size of approximately 30 students. To bolster academic success, our department boasts a robust tutoring staff dedicated to supporting instruction in foundational courses. We believe in providing students with the tools they need for interactive, hands-on learning. As such, every student is equipped with a personal laptop and the necessary software, ensuring a rich and immersive educational experience.

We are a very inclusive department of 32 full-time members with a commitment to diversity, a strong tradition of excellence in teaching, and a growing program of scholarship and research in computer science, mathematics, statistics, and related areas. The department is committed to student-centered and technology-enhanced instruction. Technology usage includes students working on laptops in the classroom, web enhancements (e.g., Canvas course management and online homework systems), and interactive distance education courses. Our department members actively serve and participate in a wide range of prominent research conferences and communities, both regionally and on the international stage. These engagements extend to well-respected organizations such as IEEE, ACM, CCSC, MICS, and ACM/SIGCSE.
