Vehicle Equipment Technician II
Full Time - 100% Position
ABOUT THE JOB:
The auto technician (70%) portion of this position is responsible for the performance of preventative maintenance and repair work on fleet vehicles, auxiliary engines and other motorized equipment.  This includes, but is not limited to automobiles, vans, loaders, dump trucks, utility vehicles, forklifts and aerial lifts.  Fuels and cleans fleet vehicles for fleet operations. 
 
The facilities repair worker portion (30%) of this position performs maintenance and repairs on exterior and interior building systems.   Completes installations and repairs of furniture, furnishings, boards, equipment and accessories.  Performs roof, masonry, caulking, and concrete repairs and inspections. Operates equipment such as forklift, scissor lift and boom lift.  Assists skilled trades in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, steam fitting, painting, locksmithing, etc. on projects. 
 
Position requires employee to use considerable judgement and carry out duties with minimal supervision.  Completes record keeping and ordering of supplies on a daily basis.  Performs work in a safe, efficient and timely manner. Employee shift is 7:00 am - 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

Special Requirements
 
  • Valid Driver's license
  • Ability to obtain forklift operator certification
  • Ability to obtain underground storage tank certification
  • Ability to pass essential job function physical test
 
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities 
30%       Performs and oversees preventative maintenance for vehicles, auxiliary engines, and other motorized equipment.
  • Performs preventive maintenance per original equipment specifications. Checks and adjusts brakes
  • Inspects and replaces belts as needed
  • Performs oil changes, lubrication, multi-point inspection, and maintain fluid levels for all University Vehicles
  • Tests, charges and/or replaces and recycles batteries. Checks alignments and repairs or has aligned as needed
  • Checks exhaust systems
  • Rotates tires at recommended intervals and replaces worn or damaged tires as needed.
  • Diagnoses and repairs fuel injection systems
  • Flushes cooling systems
  • Repacks bearings as required
  • Performs Annual Safety inspections
 
30%       Performs repairson vehicles, auxiliary engines, and other motorized equipment
  • Repairs/replaces vehicle and equipment parts and components
  • Repairs/replaces drive trains, including all clutches, transmissions, universal joints, rear axles
  • Replaces engine oil seals and gaskets
  • Repairs/replace brake systems
  • Repairs/replace exhaust systems
  • Diagnoses and repairs electrical systems
 
10%       Fuels and Prepares Fleet Vehicles
  • Cleans interior and exterior of University vehicles as needed
  • Ensures fleet vehicles are fueled as needed on a daily basis
  • Performs other tasks to ensure vehicles are ready for fleet users, including but not limited to: snow, ice and frost removal.  Coordinate windshield repairs,  body  work and mechanical  repairs  by  vendors
  • Maintains records of fuel pumped, vehicles cleaned and supplies used
  • Records results of multi-point and safety inspections and provides to supervisor
  • Requests fuel, parts and supplies as needed and takes delivery 
  • Monthly tank leak check.  Department of Commerce File kept in Garage
 
10%      Building envelope and interior maintenance, repairs and installations
  • Repairs, adjusts and maintains windows, screens, doors and door hardware, roof hatches, skylights, etc. .
  • Assists in preparing surfaces and repairing caulked, masonry and expansion and contraction joints
  • Repairs and maintains roofs, roof appurtenances and accessories and roof components
  • Assists in repairing and replacing floor finishes and coverings
  • Assists in repairing wall surfaces and finishes and preparing surfaces for painting
  • Repairs and replaces ceiling systems
  • Assists in repairing, adjusting, replacing and maintaining door and window hardware, shelving, chalk and tack boards, signs, cabinets, internal and external trim and other fixed equipment
  • Repairs, maintains, disassembles, and assembles general classroom and office furniture
 
10%       Remodeling, alteration and renovation projects
  • Builds concrete forms, places reinforcing steel and mesh as required, pours concrete and does some concrete finishing for floors, walks, steps, foundations, equipment pads, etc.
  • Performs demolition work as required 
  • Performs mason tending duties
  • Assists in rough carpentry work and assists journeyman carpenters
  • Assists with installations of ceiling systems, walks and fixed building equipment
  • Assists journeyman trades as required in the course of completion of projects
 
5%          Equipment Operation Skills
  • As required, operates forklifts, extendable boom all terrain forklifts, skidsteer, trucks, concrete coring machines, concrete saws, compressors, jackhammers, sandblaster, power augers, concrete vibrators, Aerial boom and scissors lift, etc. 
  • As required, operates table saws, radial arm saws, band saw, planner, jointer, sanders, drill press, welding and cutting equipment and various other shop tools
  • Performs preventative maintenance and some repair on most equipment listed above, including setup and adjusting
 
5%           Miscellaneous
  • Responds as needed to fleet emergencies outside of normal work hours
  • Complies with recognized environmental health and safety standards
  • Keeps shops and storage areas clean and arranged in safe working condition
  • Attends relevant training in respect to achieving the assigned tasks
  • Transports university vehicles for repairs, recalls, repair estimates, exchanges, and to auction sites as needed
  • Performs emergency repairs to Grounds equipment in the absence of the Grounds Mechanic
  • Assists skilled trades with their maintenance and repair work as needed
  • Performs cleaning duties upon completion of tasks or projects of equipment, material and machine moving and relocation of all as required by the supervisor
  • Assists with warehouse and tool crib when necessary
  • Delivers filters, motors, pumps, equipment, etc. to required locations
  • Assists with snow removal if necessary
  • Performs other maintenance work as necessary for the University to function with a minimum of interruptions
  • Uses campus e-mail and internet programs for communication and information, as needed, to compliment campus protocol
  • Performs record keeping for all activities above
