Menomonie, Wis. --- The University of Wisconsin-Stout will host Family Weekend 2009 beginning Friday, April 17 and ending Sunday, April 19. Weekend events, planned and implemented by students, faculty and staff, are designed to provide families with an authentic university experience. In addition to the entertaining events offered, family members are invited to visit campus labs and attend faculty presentations as they spend time with their student and become part of the university family.
Events begin Friday, April 17, with the performance of the play “Urinetown” at 7:30 p.m., in the Harvey Hall Theatre of Harvey Hall. This comedic musical is directed by UW-Stout associate professor of speech Paul Calenberg. It is a hilarious tale of greed, corruption, love and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight in gold. Also Friday, at 8 p.m., Midwestern comedian Michael Palascak will provide a free performance in the Terrace Café of the Memorial Student Center. Palascak, in his mid-twenties, is from Wabash, Ind. He has performed in the Comedy Festival held at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas and was the winner of HBO’s Lucky 21 Stand-up Contest. He also won the Chicago region of Comedy Central’s Open Mic Fight.
A Legacy Family Breakfast will be held from 8-9:30 a.m., Saturday, April 18, in the Terrace Café of the Memorial Student Center. This full breakfast is for alumni and their currently enrolled sons or daughters. The cost is $5. The American Hospitality Professionals Annual Silent Auction will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, April 18, in Huff’s located in the lower level of the Memorial Student Center. This year marks the 33rd annual benefit auction. Monies raised are donated to local organizations and toward scholarships for members of the American Hospitality Professionals organization. After the silent auction, a live auction is held which includes auctioning off overnight stays at bed and breakfast accommodations and tours, as well as other items.
At 11 a.m., Saturday, April 18, the UW-Stout Concert and Jazz Band will perform in the Great Hall of the Memorial Student Center. This annual event, directed by Stephanie Graber music professor, showcases the instrumental talents of the university students. The film “Yes Man” will be shown at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 18, in room 324 of the Applied Arts Building. In this comedy film, star Jim Carrey is challenged to say “yes” to everything instead of “no.” There is no admission charge.
The UW-Stout Choir will present a concert at 4 p.m., Saturday, April 18, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, located at 910 Ninth St. in Menomonie. The concert will feature the Symphonic Singers, soloists and instrumentalists in a performance of John Rutter's "Requiem" and additional selections. Also, the Vocal Jazz Ensemble will perform a wide variety of jazz standards with soloists and instrumental ensemble. At 8 p.m., Saturday, April 18, Fashion Without Fabric, UW-Stout’s department of art and design annual show, will be held in the Great Hall of the Memorial Student Center. This unique fashion event exhibits nonfabric attire designed and modeled by students majoring in art and design. Events begin at 7:30 a.m., Sunday, April 19, with the 42nd Annual Car Show to be held at the Dunn County Recreation Park, located at 620 17th Street in Menomonie. This event continues until 2:30 p.m. The UW-Stout Auto Club participates in the show.
The University Recreation department offers opportunities for family weekend visitors. The Health and Fitness Center, located in room 41 of the Sports and Fitness Center, offers free workouts for members’ parents and other immediate family. Stout Adventures, located in room 41 of the Sports and Fitness Center, which includes the climbing wall and the challenge course also offers free workouts for members’ immediate family. Participation in intramural sports is open and free for parents and immediate family members if they attend with their student who has a current UW-Stout ID. The swimming pool is also free and open for parents and immediate family members if they attend with their student who has a current UW-Stout ID.
