Mussels are an important part of river ecosystems because they remove particulate matter from the water column and are excellent indicators of water quality. Half of the native populations in Wisconsin are endangered or threatened. The Mussel Monitoring project will identify and count the current mussel population in Eau Claire County streams. Mussell Monitoring volunteers will learn about mussel ecology, habitat requirements, visual identification, and proper monitoring protocols as they assist in surveying streams in Eau Claire County. Volunteers will be asked to commit to an 8 hour day at each stream they will be surveying. Surveying of streams will be performed between June and August. Bring your own waders if you have them, or some will be available for use.
