Job Duties
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is responsible for leading the Chamber of Commerce (Chamber) to successfully achieve its mission to promote and foster a healthy economy and quality lifestyle for members and the community.  The CEO will maintain and grow the membership of the Chamber as well as represent the Chamber at various functions throughout the year.  They will organize and/or lead various fund raising events and activities with successful outcomes.  They will work with members and potential members to better understand how the Chamber can best serve them through its mission and clearly define the Chamber’s successes and challenges to the Board. They will serve/facilitate as the Destination marketing Office for the City of Sparta.  As a highly visible representative of the Chamber, the CEO will convey professional appearance, positive attitude and effective communication.
Skills required
The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate skills in the following areas:
  • Able to lead and gain  volunteers to assist in meeting the Chamber’s mission
  • Financial management skills including the ability to read and understand financial statements used by the Chamber, recognizing trends, threats and vulnerabilities to Chamber finances
  • An independent self-starter with the ability to communicate clearly to  employees, board members, volunteers, government officials, businesses off all sizes and the general public
  • Possess high level written and verbal communication skills
  • Computer skills including, but not limited to:  Quick Books, MS Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), Chambermaster, Constant Contact, various social media platforms and website content management system
  • Must be sales and marketing oriented
  • Willingness to travel to conferences and trade shows

Areas of Responsibility
  • Augments member relationships by becoming engaged with members, their goals and concerns regarding future business environment while building strategic relationships with regional organizations and officials to enhance the mission of the Chamber. and indentifies key players that can assist in furthering the mission of the Chamber.
  • Leads in development and accomplishment of strategic organizational goals.
  • Stays current of business trends and best practices. Communicates, integrates and interprets this information so that it is actionable by Chamber staff, the Board of Directors and members.
  • Acts as the key spokesperson for the Chamber.  
  • Shall be responsible for the preparation of an operating budget covering all activities of the Chamber, subject to approval by the Board of Directors.  The Chief Executive Officer shall also be responsible for all expenditures with approved budget allocations.
  • Continually improves a membership recruitment and retention plan based on economic indicators and other factors.
  • Encourage active participation at Chamber membership events.
  • Conducts a needs assessment and provides quantifiable results based on feedback of members and potential members. Recommends solutions within the scope of the Chamber.
  • Coordinates the activities of the Chamber committees in conjunction with the Board of Directors, and provides necessary staff assistance.  
  • Provides guidance and direction for the Destination Marketing Committee for tourism.
  • Reports to the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors regarding the current status of membership, finances, as well as other progress of strategic initiatives on opportunities/threats to achieve the Chamber’s mission.
  • Oversees Chamber publications and communications.
  • Maintain a professional and organized atmosphere in the Chamber Office.
  • Other duties deemed necessary to achieve the mission of the Chamber.
  • Provide an annual report to the City of Sparta for the use of room tax dollars used as the Destination Marketing Office IAW state law.
  • Works with Certified Accounting Firm to compile Chamber’s finances on an annual basis for presentation at Annual Meeting.

Full-time, semi-flexible schedule.  Maintains consistent Chamber office hours as determined by the Board of Directors.  Available for appointments, meetings, and other position responsibilities as necessary.  Frequently requires evening and weekend availability.
