At its meeting last Wednesday, the legislature's Joint Finance Committee increased annual funding to the state's Youth Apprenticeship program by $1 million per year, moving its annual appropriation from $5 million to $6 million. The committee also approved increasing the maximum per student grant from $900 to $1,100. This now becomes part of the budget JFC will eventually present to the Governor. The YA program connects high school juniors and seniors with an employer of their choosing. After obtaining a job during the school year, the students are paired with a mentor at their worksite--allowing young individuals to earn money while gaining experience within their chosen industry. In Eau Claire County, the Eau Claire Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation serves as the administrative consortium for the program, serving the Altoona, Eau Claire, and Fall Creek school districts. “Today’s vote continues our commitment to helping our local businesses connect with talent as they recover from the effects of the pandemic,” said Rep. Warren Petryk (R-Eleva), who chairs the Assembly Workforce Development Committee. “This program continues to be popular with students, parents, and businesses as students get on-the-job training to help prepare them for the next step in their lives, whether it be future education or starting their career.” Also last week, Petryk's committee unanimously approved AB 220, authored by Rep. Loren Oldenburg, which requires schools to notify parents and students about the availability of the Youth Apprenticeship program in their school district.
